🌙 Ashura 1448 AH

Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, falls on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

This blessed day commemorates the day Allah swt saved Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. Out of gratitude to Allah swt, Musa (AS) fasted on this day, and our beloved Prophet ﷺ also fasted and encouraged his Ummah to do the same.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope from Allah swt that it will expiate the sins of the previous year."

(Sahih Muslim)

Although fasting on the 10th alone is valid and virtuous, the Prophet ﷺ encouraged adding another day to it. When he learned that the People of the Book also observed Ashura, he said:

"If I live until next year, we will certainly fast the ninth."

(Sahih Muslim)

Scholars explain that this was to distinguish the Muslim practice while preserving the special virtue of fasting on Ashura itself.

Recommended fasting options:

1️⃣ 9th & 10th of Muharram (June 24 & 25)

This is the strongest and most established practice, based on the authentic hadith in which the Prophet ﷺ expressed his intention to fast the 9th along with the 10th.

2️⃣ 10th & 11th of Muharram (June 25 & 26)

Many scholars recommended this as another way of accompanying the fast of Ashura with an additional day and distinguishing the Muslim practice from that of the People of the Book.

3️⃣ 9th, 10th & 11th of Muharram (June 24, 25 & 26)

Many scholars, including Ibn al-Qayyim (RA), considered this the most complete observance of Ashura because it combines all of the reported recommendations regarding fasting before and after the 10th.

May Allah swt allow us to benefit from the blessings of Muharram, accept our fasting and worship, and grant forgiveness, mercy, and guidance to us all.

Ameen.

Fidya and Kaffarah (Missed Fasts)

Fidya - $12 per day “Fidya” is paid by individuals who cannot fulfill the obligation of fasting due to chronic illness or old age. Fidya payments are meant to feed a person in need for each of the fasting days missed. If the donor is from a low-income family, he or she should then care for the family’s needs first before considering giving a separate Fidya donation. In the hanafi madhab, this doesn’t apply to pregnant or breastfeeding women, as they will be able to fast in the future. So they must perform qada (making up missed fasts) rather than paying fidya. “Kaffara,” provides individuals who deliberately miss or break a day of fasting an opportunity to recompense for it. According to Islamic guidelines, if a person misses a day of fasting without a valid reason, he or she should either fast for 60 consecutive days or feed 60 under privileged people per day. The estimated cost is $12 per person for 60 people, which equals $720 a day for each missed or broken day. Beyond Ramadan, Kaffara may also be given to recompense for broken oaths or promises. In these cases, 10 underprivileged people should be fed for each occurrence. The estimated cost is $12 per person for 10 people, which equals $120 per broken promise. If the donor is from a low-income family, and cannot afford the payment, it is recommended that he or she should fast for three days, and make sure to “protect your oath,” meaning he or she should stay true to his or her word going forward.
