"Help Us Recover from a Devastating Fire
On February 9th, around 1:30–2:00 PM, my wife and I received a phone call that no homeowner ever wants to receive: my brother called to tell us that our home was on fire.
At the time, we were overseas so my wife could spend time with her family after not seeing them for a long time. Hearing that your home is burning while being thousands of miles away and unable to do anything is a feeling I would not wish on anyone. We had tenants living in the home at the time to help cover expenses while I was unable to work. They were a hardworking family with two young children who always paid their rent and took care of the home. The fire department later determined that the fire was accidental, but the damage left behind was devastating.
After returning home two weeks ago, I contacted my insurance provider, Broome County Co-Operative Insurance Company, hoping they would help cover the damage. Unfortunately, I was told that my policy did not include the type of coverage needed for a home with tenants living in it. I also reached out to my local insurance agent, who tried contacting them again on my behalf, but I was told there was nothing more they could do...."
